Shakey Jake Harris - 1972 - The Devil's Harmonica [256]

Shakey Jake Harris (April 12, 1921 – March 2, 1990) was an American Chicago blues singer, harmonicist and songwriter. Harris released five albums over a period of almost 25 years, and he was often musically associated with his nephew, Magic Sam. Throughout the 1960s Harris and Sam appeared regularly in concert together around Chicago, and Harris's patronage of younger musicians helped secure Luther Allison's recording debut. Harris moved on in the late 1960s, and recorded with Allison in Los Angeles on Further on Up the Road. He also played with other harmonica players, such as William Clarke and Rod Piazza.

John Fohl - 2002 - Time Ain't Waitin' [320]

Since his arrival in New Orleans in 1996, John Fohl has become one of the busiest guitarists anywhere. He's released two records, 1998's 'I Got News For You' and 2000's 'Time Ain't Waitin', and is cultivating a successful solo career that keeps him in demand locally and abroad. Both recordings feature John's formidable acoustic guitar skills and rich, soulful voice in an intimate setting with some special guests sitting in. This Montana native's ten years spent in the musically vibrant Pacific Northwest found him recording and touring with many of that region's most successful acts as well. Twenty years in the music business has also found him backing up artists such as Bo Diddley and Joe Huston, and he's appeared on recordings alongside Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Henry Vestine, and David Douce and of course working with Dr John!

BillyLee Janey - 2010 - Gimme Some Lightnin' [VBR]

Iowa's legendary rock guitarist is back again! This time around, it's a full throttle non-stop barrage of down and dirty smoldering heavy blues rock guitar licks that just keep coming at you from start to finish. It's almost like one long heavy guitar jam session where Janey just cuts loose at will. Janey’s mean and nasty tone and signature axe-slingin style are totally electrifying here. And as with all of Janey's solo albums, it's not just the guitar playing that stands out but also the great catchy classic rock and blues songs as well. This could very well be his strongest solo album yet!

Johnnie Taylor - 1977 - Chronicle The 20 Greatest Hits [256]

Getting his big break as Sam Cooke's replacement in the Soul Stirrers, vocalist Johnnie Taylor may have started out in gospel, but he truly hit his stride when he shifted to R&B and signed to the Stax label in the mid 1960s. This 20-track collection covers Taylor's '60s/'70s run on Stax, beginning with the singer's first major hits--the lightly funky, horn-laden "Who's Makin' Love?" and its like-minded follow-up, "Take Care of Your Homework." Many of these late-'60s/early-'70s tracks feature Stax's mind-blowing assemblage of in-house musicians--from Isaac Hayes on guitar to the Memphis Horns and Booker T. & the MG's--and this top-notch backing only enhances the punch of Taylor's impassioned, raspy style.

Growing up in the shadows Chicago's blues mecca, Theresa's Lounge, had a lasting effect on Toronzo Cannon. As a kid, Toronzo would listen to the raw, soulful sounds of legends like Junior Wells, Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters. After playing rhythm guitar with local artists like Wayne Baker Brooks and Joanna Connor, Toronzo decided to form his own band, The Cannonball Express. He immediately was in demand, playing some of Chicago’s greatest blues venues like Buddy Guy’s Legends, Kingston Mines, B.L.U.E.S, and Blue Chicago as well as shows from Kentucky to Delaware and Iowa to Indiana. Hank Shizzoe - 2001 - Hank Shizzoe [320]

Hank's fourth album has the same name as he does: «Hank Shizzoe». Why? Because it’s a solo album. Literally. All Hank, solo. But not just him with a folk guitar and a good mood. No, no. With all kinds of toys and, mostly, lots of guitars. Red ones, black ones, white ones and even wooden ones. So, it’s not another House album. But you can still dance to a lot of these songs.«Hank Shizzoe» offers 14 songs. 13 of them were written specially by Thomas Erb. Along with all those Erb tunes there’s the fantastic «Do Not Forsake Me».That’s the beautiful song from the film «High Noon», written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington.

John Nemeth - 2010 - Name The Day [192]

John Nιmeth has crafted another timeless slice of American music. Drawing on the classic blues, soul, and R&B influences that inform his stunning vocal style, John lays down a set of tunes that wouldn't sound a bit out of place in the golden years of Memphis or Muscle Shoals. His spine-tingling vocals, with echoes of the toughness of James Brown and the tenderness of Solomon Burke, infuse the album with a funky, soulful feeling. And the hard-hitting, edgy R&B sound from his earlier award-winning releases is still there, but with an expanded tonal palate and a heightened craftsmanship. Tracks like the merciless "Breaking Free" and the punchy "Tuff Girl" showcase soul-revue arrangements replete with a full horn section, Hammond organ, and piano accompaniment. The loping, laid-back Southern-fried rhythm section sits in the pocket, the sinewy Cropper-esque guitars weave in and out, all supporting the tremulous, gospel-tinged tenor voice that has burned up stages across the land. On Name The Day!, John continues to reinvigorate vintage American rhythm and blues with his uncanny ability to skillfully blend retro and modern blues and soul into compelling music that is simultaneously old and new.

Johnny Heartsman - 1987 - Sacramento [320]

Shaven-headed Johnny Heartsman did so many musical things so well that he's impossible to pigeonhole. His low-moaning lead guitar work greatly distinguished a myriad of Bay Area blues recordings during the '50s and '60s, and still played his axe with delicious dexterity and dynamics into the '90s. But Heartsman was just as likely to cut loose on organ or blow a titillating solo on flute (perhaps the unlikeliest blues instrument imaginable). He possessed a mellow, richly burnished voice to boot.

Bobby Parker - 1993 - Bent Out Of Shape [256]

Though guitarist Bobby Parker's success is recent, he's been a driving behind-the-scenes force in the blues for a long time. Listening to his Black Top Records debut, 1993's Bent Out of Shape, it's easy to hear why. Parker has the sure skill of the veteran, so that even when his solos are at their most elaborate, he never sounds like he's showing off. He works with bassist Lee Allen Zeno to a degree rarely heard among blues guitarists; listen to how the lines play off of each other on "Bobby-A-Go-Go." In fact, the bass work is strong throughout, coming to the fore on "Break It Up" and the album's scorching closer, "Blues Get Off My Shoulder." Parker's a more than capable vocalist as well, whispering, shouting, and wailing with never a wrong note. Bent Out of Shape has the feel of a best-kept secret.

James Harman Band - 1987 - Those Dangerous Gentlemens [192]

This is one of the finest examples of contemporary blues recorded in the last twenty years. The band boasted a strong rhythm section with Willie J. Campbell on bass and Steven T. Hodges on drums, but what really sparked the band on this album was the twin guitar attack of Hollywood Fats (who died of heart failure at 32 before this album was released) and a then 27-year-old Kid Ramos. Then, of course, there is Harman's propulsive harmonica playing. Harman wrote or co-wrote all tracks with his bandmates except for Dennis Linde's "My Baby's Gone." Whether they were performing swamp blues numbers like "Voodoo Love," slow blues like "I've Been Lovin' You" (with shared lead vocals by Bonnie Bramlett) or romping through the Bo Diddley beat of "Kiss of Fire," The James Harman Band proved themselves to be one of the most exciting bands on the blues circuit.

Big Al Carson - 2002 - Take Your Drunken Ass Home [256]

Everyone has thought it on occasion, when a drunk spoils the party for everyone else, and now Big Al Carson has written a song that expresses what everyone was thinking. "Take Your Drunken Ass Home" was written by Carson extemporaneously one night, as the blues musician and his band were repeatedly interrupted during their set by an inebriated patron at a New Orleans bar. Since then, the song has become a favorite during the Carnival season, culminating in its biggest day, Mardi Gras, with plenty of people needing this kind of advice. Music veteran Carson has chosen the humorous tune as the title cut of his 2002 CD release. Playing a regular gig for years at the Funky Pirate Bar on Bourbon Street, Big Al Carson has seen quite a few patrons like the one who inspired this song. It is just like the good-natured singer to take it all in stride by making an entertaining song out of the situation: crowd control big easy-style. Some other songs on the album reflect the New Orleans party spirit as well.
