Shakey Jake Harris - 1972 - The Devil's Harmonica [256]

Shakey Jake Harris (April 12, 1921 – March 2, 1990) was an American Chicago blues singer, harmonicist and songwriter. Harris released five albums over a period of almost 25 years, and he was often musically associated with his nephew, Magic Sam. Throughout the 1960s Harris and Sam appeared regularly in concert together around Chicago, and Harris's patronage of younger musicians helped secure Luther Allison's recording debut. Harris moved on in the late 1960s, and recorded with Allison in Los Angeles on Further on Up the Road. He also played with other harmonica players, such as William Clarke and Rod Piazza.

Bobby Parker - 1993 - Bent Out Of Shape [256]

Though guitarist Bobby Parker's success is recent, he's been a driving behind-the-scenes force in the blues for a long time. Listening to his Black Top Records debut, 1993's Bent Out of Shape, it's easy to hear why. Parker has the sure skill of the veteran, so that even when his solos are at their most elaborate, he never sounds like he's showing off. He works with bassist Lee Allen Zeno to a degree rarely heard among blues guitarists; listen to how the lines play off of each other on "Bobby-A-Go-Go." In fact, the bass work is strong throughout, coming to the fore on "Break It Up" and the album's scorching closer, "Blues Get Off My Shoulder." Parker's a more than capable vocalist as well, whispering, shouting, and wailing with never a wrong note. Bent Out of Shape has the feel of a best-kept secret.

Omar Shariff - 1972 - The Raven [320]

Texas blues singer and pianist Omar Shariff was born March 10, 1938; during the 1960s he relocated to San Francisco, where in 1971 he recorded a pair of albums for the Arhoolie label under his given name Dave Alexander. Upon adopting his stage name he kept a low profile, and did not record for another two decades; The Raven, a collection made up of ten songs cut in 1991 and seven songs cut in 1972 , marked his return to prominence.

James Harman Band - 1987 - Those Dangerous Gentlemens [192]

This is one of the finest examples of contemporary blues recorded in the last twenty years. The band boasted a strong rhythm section with Willie J. Campbell on bass and Steven T. Hodges on drums, but what really sparked the band on this album was the twin guitar attack of Hollywood Fats (who died of heart failure at 32 before this album was released) and a then 27-year-old Kid Ramos. Then, of course, there is Harman's propulsive harmonica playing. Harman wrote or co-wrote all tracks with his bandmates except for Dennis Linde's "My Baby's Gone." Whether they were performing swamp blues numbers like "Voodoo Love," slow blues like "I've Been Lovin' You" (with shared lead vocals by Bonnie Bramlett) or romping through the Bo Diddley beat of "Kiss of Fire," The James Harman Band proved themselves to be one of the most exciting bands on the blues circuit.
